American Standard toilet and faucet repair

Quick answer: flapper, fill valve or seal.

American Standard toilets are common in valley homes and rentals. Some use larger flush valves and model-specific flappers, so matching parts matters. We handle this in San Gabriel Valley homes, from Alhambra to Arcadia.

Flappers that match

Toilet flush valves come in different sizes, and several American Standard models use a larger flush valve with a matching larger flapper. A generic two-inch flapper on a larger valve will not seal, and the toilet keeps running. We check the flush valve size before swapping. If the original flapper is model-specific, we order the American Standard part so the flush stays strong.

Finding the model

The model number is usually stamped inside the tank on the back wall, near the water line (American Standard’s model number guide). American Standard’s site at americanstandard-us.com lets you look up parts by model. Photograph the stamp and send it with your request.

Common toilet problems

  • Running: a worn flapper or a fill valve that will not shut off.
  • Weak flush: a chain with too much slack, a low water level, or mineral buildup in the rim holes.
  • Rocking: loose closet bolts or an uneven floor; shims and new bolts fix it.
  • Leak at the base: a failed wax ring.
  • Leak between tank and bowl: tank bolts or the tank-to-bowl gasket.

Rental units

Many rental units have American Standard toilets because they are widely available. Landlords see the same few calls: a running toilet, a broken flush handle, a loose seat. Stocking a spare flapper and fill valve that fit your model makes those calls quick. See repairs for landlords.

American Standard faucets

American Standard faucets use ceramic disc cartridges in many models. Drips and stiff handles are usually the cartridge. Two-handle faucets have one per side. Parts are matched by model, so a photo of the faucet and any markings helps.

Replacing a toilet

When a toilet is cracked, constantly clogs or parts are unavailable, a replacement is the better buy. A new toilet goes on the existing flange with a new wax ring, new bolts and a new supply line. A WaterSense labeled toilet uses less water per flush. We haul away the old one.

Shutoff valves

The small valve behind the toilet is often decades old and stiff. If it will not close fully, it is worth replacing during any toilet repair. See replacing old supply valves.

Questions we ask before the visit

Is the toilet running, weak, rocking or leaking? When did the problem start? Has anyone replaced parts recently, and with what?

Buying American Standard toilet parts
  • Parts for the American Standard toilet, priced first
  • Bought one? Fine

For rentals, can the tenant send a photo of the open tank, and is someone home to let us in? Clear answers mean we arrive with the right flapper and leave with the toilet working, which saves the owner a second trip charge and the tenant a second interruption. A unit number and gate code in the request save time on arrival.

A typical American Standard visit

A tenant reports a toilet that keeps running. The property manager forwards a photo of the open tank. We measure the flush valve opening from the photo when we can, bring the matching flapper and a fill valve, and on site test both.

A dye test shows if the flapper is sealing. If the fill valve is hissing, it gets replaced too. Before leaving, we flush several times to check the refill stops at the right level and the handle returns cleanly.

Seat swaps

Toilet seats crack or the hinges loosen. A new seat that matches the bowl shape, round or elongated, is a simple swap. Slow-close seats are a small upgrade many people like, and they suit homes with kids who slam lids.

Older homes

Older valley homes often have toilets from decades ago, sometimes American Standard. Some use more water per flush than new models. If parts for an old model are hard to find, replacement often makes more sense than chasing parts, and a new WaterSense labeled toilet cuts water use.

Flush handles and trip levers

Handles break at the trip lever inside the tank, or the nut loosens and the handle droops. Matching the handle to the tank style, front-mount or side-mount, keeps the flush working and the look consistent. We check the chain length after any handle swap.

Bathroom faucets and drains

American Standard bathroom faucets often come with pop-up drains. When the stopper will not hold water, adjusting the linkage under the sink usually solves it. A drain that leaks at the joint under the basin needs new washers or a new drain body.

Kitchen sinks

American Standard also makes kitchen sinks. Resealing the rim, swapping a strainer or connecting a new disposal to an existing sink is routine work. See our garbage disposal pages.
