Canister flush valves
- Only the Kohler fixture
- Add a short list
Many newer Kohler toilets use a canister flush valve instead of a flapper. A tall cylinder lifts to release water and drops onto a seal. When the seal wears, the toilet runs or refills on its own, just like a leaky flapper.
The repair is usually a new canister seal, a simple part once you know to look for it. People who buy a standard flapper for a Kohler with a canister find it does not fit. See toilet keeps running.

Identifying a Kohler toilet
Look inside the tank, usually on the back wall, for a stamped model number and a date. The lid and the bowl may also be marked. Kohler’s site at kohler.com lists parts by model. One-piece toilets, where the tank and bowl are a single unit, need specific parts and care when servicing.

Fill valves and flush handles
Kohler toilets use fill valves that may be Kohler-branded or universal. A hissing tank or a slow refill is usually the fill valve. Flush handles and their linkages can break or loosen; matching the handle to the tank style keeps the look consistent.

Kohler faucets
Kohler kitchen and bath faucets use ceramic disc cartridges in many models. A drip from the spout or a handle that turns too far is often a worn cartridge. Kohler two-handle bath faucets have a cartridge on each side; if only one side drips, only one cartridge is needed.
Kohler showers
Kohler shower valves come in pressure-balancing and thermostatic families. Symptoms like sudden temperature swings, a valve that will not shut off fully, or low flow can point to a worn cartridge or debris in the valve. We identify the valve from the trim and the cartridge and replace the right part. See shower valve repair.

Leaks at the base
Water at the base of any toilet usually means a failed wax ring or loose closet bolts, not the brand. That repair means pulling the toilet and resetting it. See toilet repairs and swaps.
Repair or replace
Cracked tanks or bowls, discontinued parts, or a toilet that clogs constantly are signs to replace. A new toilet goes in on the same flange with a new wax ring and supply line.

Not a Kohler service center
Kohler Co. has not appointed or endorsed us; we repair Kohler fixtures independently. Product coverage questions go to Kohler.
Questions we ask before the visit
Is the toilet one-piece or two-piece? Does it run all the time, or refill now and then? Is there water on the floor, and if so where, at the base or under the tank?
Is it the only toilet in the house? If it is, we plan the visit so you are not without one for long, and we bring a fill valve, a seal and a wax ring to cover the likely outcomes. Knowing the bowl shape also helps if a new seat is part of the job.
- Toilet model number inside the tank
- Canister flush valve or a flapper; on a canister, a leak into the bowl means the seal, not the canister
- Fill valve brand
- Faucet model, often under the sink
- Where it leaks or runs
- Photo of the tank and the faucet handle
A typical Kohler toilet visit
- A message before the Kohler fixture visit
- Old parts hauled off
You report a toilet that refills by itself every so often. We ask for a photo inside the tank. If we see a tall canister in the middle, we bring a canister seal; if we see a flapper, we bring a flapper that matches the valve size.
On site we shut the water, flush to empty the tank, swap the seal, then add a few drops of food coloring to the tank and wait. Color in the bowl means water is still getting past; a clear bowl means the leak is fixed. We also set the water level to the mark on the overflow tube.

Kohler parts at the store
Big-box stores stock some Kohler parts but not all. Universal fill valves fit most Kohler toilets. Canister seals and some flush valve parts are specific, which is why we check before buying.
One-piece toilets
Kohler makes many one-piece toilets, where tank and bowl are molded together. They are easier to clean but heavier and harder to move. Replacing the wax ring on a one-piece takes two people and care, since a dropped one-piece toilet cracks. Parts inside the tank are similar to two-piece models.

Quiet-close seats
Kohler seats with quick-release hinges come off for cleaning and close slowly. When the slow-close stops working or the seat shifts, a new seat or new hinges fix it. We match the bowl shape, round or elongated.
Kohler kitchen sinks
Kohler cast iron and stainless sinks are common in kitchens. Resealing the rim, replacing a basket strainer, or fitting a new faucet on an existing Kohler sink are all handyman jobs. A cracked cast iron sink needs replacement, which may involve the countertop.
- Hot-water shutoff (angle stop)
- Cold-water shutoff (angle stop)
- Supply lines to the faucet
- P-trap, which holds a water seal
- Drain line into the wall
Bathroom faucets with pop-up drains
Lift-rod pop-up drains on Kohler bath faucets can loosen or stop sealing. Adjusting the pivot rod under the sink, or swapping in a push-button drain, keeps water in the basin when you want it.
