What Fluidmaster makes

Fluidmaster valve parts
  • Fluidmaster valve parts named up front
  • Bring your own

Fluidmaster makes replacement toilet parts: fill valves, flappers, flush valves, complete repair kits, tank-to-bowl kits, wax rings and supply lines. They fit many toilet brands, which is why they are so common. Their site, fluidmaster.com, has installation guides and fit tools.

Fill valves

The fill valve refills the tank after a flush. A worn one hisses, refills slowly, or keeps running. A Fluidmaster fill valve fits most two-piece toilets. Installing it right means setting the height so the critical level mark sits above the overflow tube, attaching the refill tube to the overflow with the clip, and setting the water level to the line marked inside the tank.

Flappers

Flappers seal the flush valve at the bottom of the tank. A worn flapper lets water seep into the bowl so the tank refills on its own. Flappers come in sizes and styles: two-inch, three-inch, and adjustable models that let you tune the flush. Matching size and style to the flush valve is what makes it seal.

When generic parts will not fit

Some toilets use a canister flush valve, a tower-style valve, or a model-specific flapper. Many Kohler toilets use canisters, and some American Standard toilets use larger valves with special flappers. Fluidmaster makes some replacement seals for those, but not every model.

We check the toilet before buying. See Kohler repair and American Standard repair.

If the flush valve seat is cracked or pitted, a new flapper will not seal. Replacing the whole flush valve means removing the tank, swapping the valve and the tank-to-bowl gasket, and reinstalling with new bolts. It is more work than a flapper, but it is the real fix for a leak that keeps coming back.

Supply lines

The braided hose from the wall to the fill valve should be replaced when you change the fill valve, especially if it is older. Hand-tighten, then a quarter turn more; overtightening cracks plastic nuts.

A dye test

To check if a flapper leaks, add a few drops of food coloring to the tank, do not flush, and wait. Color in the bowl means water is getting past the flapper or flush valve. A clear bowl means the leak is elsewhere, usually the fill valve. See toilet keeps running.

A typical visit

Fluidmaster valve help in Mandarin or Cantonese
  • English
  • Mandarin
  • Cantonese Chinese

You text that the toilet hisses and refills every half hour. We ask for a photo inside the tank. On site we dye-test, then replace the fill valve, the flapper or both with Fluidmaster parts that fit, set the water level, replace the supply line, and flush several times. If the valve seat is damaged, we explain the flush valve option before going further.

Common mistakes

A chain with too much slack keeps a flapper from lifting fully; too little holds it open. The refill tube pushed down inside the overflow siphons water constantly. A water level set too high spills into the overflow and runs. Small details, but each one keeps a toilet running.

Match the part before buying
  • Flush valve size: a flapper about 3 inches across fits a 2-inch valve, about 4 inches a 3-inch valve
  • Fill valve height in the tank
  • Handle on the left, right or front
  • Brand and model inside the tank
  • Flapper or canister style

Independent

We are not affiliated with Fluidmaster. We install their parts, among others, because they fit many toilets.

If water is leaking: first steps
  1. Shut it offTurn the valve under the fixture clockwise, or the main valve.
  2. Relieve pressureOpen a faucet nearby so the line drains.
  3. Contain itTowels and a bucket; unplug anything wet.
  4. Photo and textSnap the leak and valve, then text us.

Handles and trip levers

Fluidmaster also sells universal flush handles. Front-mount, side-mount and angle-mount handles differ, so we check where the handle sits on the tank. After fitting, the chain is set so the flapper lifts fully with a little slack at rest. A handle that sticks down after a flush usually means the chain is catching or the lever arm rubs the tank lid.

Toilets in rentals

For landlords, standardizing on one fill valve and one flapper per toilet model means a spare in the supply closet fixes most calls. We note the parts used in each unit so the next repair goes faster, which helps the next repair go smoothly for tenants. A short note taped inside the tank lid listing the part numbers helps any future repair too.

Complete repair kits

Fluidmaster sells kits that include a fill valve, a flapper and sometimes a flush valve. For an older toilet with several worn parts, a full kit replaces the worn parts together and avoids coming back for the next part to fail.

Quiet refill

Older ballcock fill valves are loud and slow. A modern fill valve refills quieter and faster, a small improvement that people notice right away in bathrooms near bedrooms.

Water use

A running toilet wastes water around the clock. The EPA’s WaterSense program has guidance on finding household leaks. Fixing a flapper is one of the quickest ways to cut a water bill that jumped for no clear reason.

Tank-to-bowl leaks

Water dripping from under the tank onto the floor, not from the base of the bowl, often comes from tank bolts or the gasket between tank and bowl. Fluidmaster tank-to-bowl kits include new bolts, washers and a gasket. The tank comes off to fit them.
