Start with the rating label
- A text on the way to the A. O. Smith heater
- Floors covered, tidy after
The label on the side of every A. O. Smith tank shows model, serial, capacity, fuel and input rating. A. O. Smith’s site at hotwater.com has manuals and parts lists by model. A sharp photo of the label tells us most of what we need before a visit.
Flashing status light
Many A. O. Smith gas tanks have a gas control with a status light. The number of flashes points to a condition, such as pilot not sensed or a temperature sensor fault. The chart is printed on the unit or in the manual.
Reading it first saves guessing. Some codes call for cleaning or replacing the pilot assembly; some call for a new control valve; a few point to venting problems.
- Cold-water shutoff and inlet
- Hot-water outlet
- Temperature and pressure relief valve
- Gas valve or thermostat
- Drain valve, used for flushing
Power vent units
Some A. O. Smith tanks have a power vent blower on top and plug into an outlet. If the blower fails or the outlet loses power, the heater shuts down for safety. Checking the outlet and the blower comes first. Venting changes are plumbing work.
Electric tanks
Electric A. O. Smith tanks use two elements and two thermostats. A high-limit reset trips when a thermostat sticks. We test each element and thermostat with the power off and replace failed ones like-for-like.

Noise and sediment
Popping or rumbling during heating comes from water trapped under sediment flashing to steam. Flushing the tank helps. If the drain valve is plastic and old, it may break when opened, so we bring a brass replacement. See flushing a tank water heater.
Leaks
A drip from a fitting at the top, a relief valve or the drain valve is usually repairable. Water from the bottom of the tank or seeping from under the jacket means the tank itself has corroded through, and replacement is the only fix. A drain pan under a heater in a closet catches small leaks before they reach the floor.

Replacement scope
We replace A. O. Smith tanks like-for-like: same fuel, a similar size, the same spot, on existing gas, water and vent connections, with new flex connectors, seismic straps and a new relief valve. Bigger changes, like a tankless conversion, a larger gas line, relocating the heater or new electrical capacity, are outside our scope. See when a water heater is worth replacing.
Expansion tanks
Homes with a pressure regulator or a check valve on the main line often need an expansion tank near the water heater. Without one, pressure spikes during heating can make the relief valve drip. A waterlogged expansion tank does the same. Checking it is part of any visit where the relief valve weeps.

A typical A. O. Smith visit
You notice the burner will not light. We ask for a photo of the gas control while the light is flashing, and count the flashes on the video. Before arriving we look up the code and bring the matching part. On site we confirm the gas valve is open, follow the maker’s steps, replace the part, relight per the label instructions, and wait for a full burn cycle before leaving.
- Model number from the rating plate on the front
- Full serial number, which A. O. Smith asks for when ordering parts
- Gallon capacity
- Gas input or electric wattage
- Relief valve rating plate
- A photo of the whole label, sharp enough to read
Independent service
We are an independent handyman, not affiliated with A. O. Smith. Their support handles questions about product coverage.
- Faucets, toilets and valves
- Traps and drain connections
- Water heaters on existing lines
- Disposals and supply lines
- Moving or adding pipe runs
- Sewer and main drain work
- Repiping and new gas lines
- Slab leaks
Age matters
The serial number on the label shows when the tank was made. Older tanks with repeated problems often cost more to keep alive than to replace. Knowing the age helps you weigh a repair against a swap, and we will tell you which way we would lean and why.
Hot water too hot
If water comes out scalding, the dial may be set too high or a control may be failing. We check the setting first. A tank that overheats even with the dial turned down needs its control checked right away, since the relief valve is the last line of defense.

Recovery time
After a long shower, a tank takes time to reheat. Gas tanks generally recover faster than electric tanks of the same size. If recovery has slowed noticeably, sediment or a failing element or burner part is the usual cause rather than the tank size.
Where the heater sits
Tanks in garages should sit on a stand when the maker or the space calls for it, with straps and clear space around them. Tanks in closets need the air openings to stay clear. We point out anything that looks off during the visit.
- Shut it offTurn the valve under the fixture clockwise, or the main valve.
- Relieve pressureOpen a faucet nearby so the line drains.
- Contain itTowels and a bucket; unplug anything wet.
- Photo and textSnap the leak and valve, then text us.
Planning a replacement before it fails
If your tank is getting old, choosing a replacement ahead of time beats shopping with a leak on the floor. Measure the closet or alcove, note the fuel type and capacity from the label, and photograph the connections at the top. With that, we can confirm a like-for-like model will fit and schedule the swap at a convenient time instead of an urgent one.
